About the Vehicle:

Web Master's Comment: This 1912 Model T Ford must have been updated at a later date as it has a Ruckstell Real End and a Martin-Parry Body. Martin-Parry's first year of production was 1919. During that time period Martin-Parry did offer bodies so customer's could update their existing vehicles.

1915 Ford T - with Parry Body - Portillo's in Fishers, Indiana

Craig Presler said:

One of the continual problems I face nearly every day is where to eat. Last night I stopped at the newest restaurant in the area.

Portillo's is a chain from Chicago that recently opened a new store in Fishers, Indiana. They specialize in hot dogs, beef and burgers, so I didn't expect much. When I stepped inside, the collection of stuff above the ketchup was more interesting than everything else. I didn't look up until I read the little sign explaining the Parry Company. The manager said they have over 50 locations and some have trucks hanging over the dining room, but not all. I can't tell if the brochures are real or really good copies.

Web master’s Comment:

Craig did further research and discovered that the truck is one and the same as Gary Kmiecik owned in the vehicle description above on this website. I contacted Gary and he told me the following:

I don’t know the guy I sold it to. He came and paid cash, scribbled his name which I can’t read on a receipt and left. That is an original sales brochure I gave it to him along with all the other Elson things you see in the photos.

Web master’s Comment:

I got Craig and Gary together and the following is Craig’s response to Gary.

Hello Gary,

Your truck is hanging from the ceiling of Portillo's, a '20's Chicago themed restaurant in Fishers, Indiana, two miles north of Indianapolis. https://www.portillos.com/locations/fishers/

The closest intersection is 116th and I-69.

This restaurant opened two months ago. When I visited on May 4, 2018, I was surprised to see a vintage M-P brochure and photos of a truck mounted above the condiment bar immediately on the right. The ceiling is rather dark, so it took me a while to notice the truck was overhead. The truck is the best thing in the restaurant. I haven't been very impressed by the food, but they were very busy today at noon.

The customer service rep at Portillo's headquarters told me they use the same design firm to provide all of the interior stuff for all of their locations, including trucks to hang from the ceiling!

About the Vehicle:
My truck is a 1921 Model T on a standard chassis. It has a two speed Warford transmission added and has had the motor changed to a 1926 T motor.  I purchased the car near Indianapolis.  It's previous home was in Pennsylvania but not sure what area. I have only had it about a week and a half now but have gotten it running and have found that most of the wood looks original although some needs replaced.

Comments:  Hello, I am rebuilding a Martin Parry wood cab model 20-B. Was there a standard color for these cabs? Green? I know custom colors for commercial vehicles was an option. If it were green, what shade. This is on a 23 ford TT chassis. I am ready to paint cab and want to use the original color. I have found black, green and red paint on my original cab parts. The brochures from the MP site show cabs in green. Any help you can offer would help.
Thank you, Dallas

Comments:  I have owned this Martin Parry bodied (Model #168) for just about 20 years.  It is an original Martin Parry body on its original standard 1923 Ford Model T chassis.

This car was originally based on an old summer estate in southwestern NH.  It spent it working life moving visiting guests’ from away baggage, their maids and valets to and from the train station during the summer social season.

In the late ‘90s, I bought it from the old estate as heirs were cleaning out carriage houses and barns of assorted old vehicles.  It was covered in 40 or 50 plus years of accumulated dust, debris and mouse droppings at purchase.  We pulled it out of the barn, inflated the tires, added a battery, gas, topped off the oil and drove it home.

It was and is remarkably complete and in in good shape retaining all of the original hardware and woodwork.  The body has been lightly sanded and re-varnished in recent years. The running gear and engine and transmission recently underwent a complete rebuild as well.  The running gear and fenders might have been repainted at some point in the past, but it was the distant past if it was.  It too is in great shape.
